This work presents the design of a bidirectional neural interface analog front-end IC for implantable medical devices using 0.18-µm CMOS process. The implemented analog front-end IC is comprised of a biphasic bipolar neural stimulator with a novel charge-balancing architecture which can accurately deliver up to 1 mA of current to the high impedance electrode-tissue interface, and an ultra-low-power low-noise neural recorder which can process both action potential and local field potential signals in the band of 1 Hz to 10 kHz. The recording path is comprised of low-noise neural amplifier, programmable gain amplifier with tunable filter, and a 10-bit SAR ADC. |
