IP개요 In this paper, the design of 28-GHz low phase noise voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) in a 28-nm CMOS process for 5G communication applications are explained. To enhance the negative transconductance from the conventional cross-coupled pair, a modified gm enhancement technique is proposed in the VCO design. To improve the phase noise performance and tuning range, a gate-drain capacitive splitting inductor with switching capacitors bank technique is proposed. Analysis of the proposed method proves that the transistor gm generation efficiency and tuning range are enhanced simultaneously. The proposed VCO achieves a tuning range from 28 – 32 GHz using by 3-bits switch capacitor and varactors. At 28.2 GHz, the proposed VCO makes a low phase noise of -109 dBc/Hz at 1-MHz offset with a power consumption of 7.8 mW.
