This work presents the design of a bidirectional neural interface analog front-end IC (AFE IC) with artifact-tolerant low-noise biopotential recording amplifier for implantable medical devices. The proposed neural recording path is comprised of a highly linear low-noise neural recording amplifier with high tolerance to both common-mode and differential interference, followed by a low-power programmable gain amplifier with tunable bandwidth for processing both action potential and local field potential signals in the band of 1 Hz to 8 kHz. For the stimulation path, a high-voltage compliant current-mode stimulator with novel active charge balancing scheme is proposed to limit the residual potential to a negligible level. The proposed bidirectional AFE IC is designed using 180 nm BCD process, where high voltage devices are utilized for the stimulation circuits while low voltage transistors are employed for the recorder path for low-power operation. |
