This proposal presents high-performance dual-core voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs), namely VCO1 and VCO2, along with a dual-mode dual-core VCO3 for low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite communications (SATCOM) applications. A harmonic shaping technique and active source degeneration are employed to each VCO, while a class-F resonator tank and inverse-class-F resonator tank with dual-core synchronization are employed in VCO1 and VCO2, respectively, to achieve ultra-low phase noise (PN). The dual-mode dual-core VCO3 incorporates a frequency reconfigurable inverse-class-F resonator tank, where coarse frequency tuning is achieved through mode switching. Each VCO is implemented in a 28-nm CMOS technology. VCO1 exhibits a simulated oscillation frequency range of 14−16.5 GHz, corresponding to a 16.4% tuning range (TR). The simulated PN at a 1-MHz offset is -113.5 dBc/Hz and -116.9 dBc/Hz at 14.2 GHz and 16.5 GHz, respectively. VCO2 achieves a TR of 11.2%, covering 14.3−16 GHz, with a simulated PN of -118.8 to -120 dBc/Hz at a 1-MHz offset. VCO3 operates in two modes, exhibiting a TR of 10.6−11.9 GHz in mode 1 and 14.6−16.5 GHz in mode 2. The simulated PN ranges from -119.9 to -123.6 dBc/Hz in mode 1 and -117 to -118.5 dBc/Hz in mode 2. |
