This IP presents the design and implementation of a low-power, wide-frequency CMOS-based electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) biosensor for non-Faradaic polar modulation. The proposed system operates within a 100 Hz to 1 MHz frequency range with a dynamic range exceeding 50 dB, enabling precise impedance measurements for biomolecular detection. Fabricated using a 180 nm CMOS process, the biosensor integrates a 5 mm × 5 mm chip with a 14 mm² active sensing area and a 128 × 128 microelectrode array. The architecture employs a magnitude detection circuit (MDC) and a phase detection circuit (PDC) without ADCs, reducing power consumption and chip area while maintaining high accuracy. The integration of CMOS technology with microfluidics and particle-assisted enhancement techniques significantly improves detection sensitivity, making it suitable for point-of-care testing (PoCT) applications. Experimental results demonstrate the biosensor’s capability to detect TNF-α, a key biomarker for inflammatory diseases, with high specificity and efficiency. The proposed design provides a scalable, energy-efficient solution for real-time biofluid analysis in medical diagnostics and environmental monitoring. |
